The Nordic region has long been known for its progressive approach to technology and design: simplicity, functionality and trust at its core. This year’s LegalTech events in Copenhagen and Stockholm showed that the same mindset is shaping the future of legal innovation. We spoke with Lars Nyhus Misfelt, Head of Sales EMEA at Epona, about what he saw on the floor and what these developments mean for the industry.
At TechTorget in Copenhagen, we had our own booth, and there was plenty of traffic,” says Lars. “People came to us, not just curious, but ready to see how integration between Epona365, Microsoft SharePoint, and AI could actually look in practice.” Most visitors, he adds, were already clients or familiar with Epona’s document management philosophy. “Roughly 80% were existing users, but several were new prospects who wanted to see what’s next. Like how AI can help them manage their documents in a smarter, more integrated way.”
For many law firms, the starting point is still what Lars calls “level zero”: “They can’t yet use AI at the matter level. Every time they want to apply AI, they need to export documents somewhere else: to a separate SharePoint or AI workspace. What excited them was the idea that Epona365 allows AI to work directly inside their normal workday, right where they already are: in Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.”
The events also brought a welcome opportunity to connect with clients familiar with Epona through Advosys. Since the merger earlier this year, many Danish firms using Epona’s (former Unik’s) case management system have shown strong interest in seeing how Epona365 complements and enhances their existing setup.
“We had several visitors from the Advosys community,” Lars explains. “They wanted to see how the integration between Advosys and Epona365 creates a complete digital workspace by connecting case management and document management into one flow. We can do this in Advosys too, but not based upon SharePoint.”
The merger between Epona and JustiSolutions has positioned the company as a unified LegalTech provider, combining Advosys’ market-leading case management strength with Epona’s deep expertise in Microsoft-based document and email management. Together, the combined organisation now serves a global client base, helping law firms of all sizes modernise their operations with intelligent, integrated technology.
In both Denmark and Sweden, the atmosphere was similar. Think pragmatic, open-minded, but grounded in real business value. At Nordic Legal Tech Day in Stockholm, Epona’s booth was busy from start to finish. “It’s always interesting to see how document management attracts attention,” Lars notes. “Every lawyer works with documents. That’s the core of legal work. If you can optimise document handling, you can save time, reduce risk, and make more money. I often say: if you can free up ten minutes a day per person in a 100-person firm, you can calculate the business impact from there.”
The Stockholm sessions also reflected a maturing market. AI was everywhere, but not as a buzzword but rather as a practical topic: how to make it work for you, not replace you. “A lot of the sessions were about helping people see AI as a support, not a threat,” Lars recalls. “Lawyers are starting to realise that AI won’t take their jobs but those who learn to use it will.”
According to Lars, Scandinavian law firms are in what he calls “the testing phase” of AI adoption.
“Everyone is trying something: Harvey, Legora; you name it. But there’s no single direction yet. Each firm is looking for the combination that fits their needs.” That’s where Epona’s open ecosystem becomes an advantage. “Epona365 integrates seamlessly with Microsoft 365 but also connects to third-party AI solutions. For example, we already integrate with Legora, an AI tool that extends our document management capabilities with legal-specific reasoning. We can take AI to a certain level within Epona and then integrate with specialist tools for the rest.”
The discussion around AI agents also caught attention at both events. Competitors were showcasing their own AI agent concepts, but Lars believes Epona’s Microsoft-based foundation gives it a unique edge. “Because we’re built on Microsoft SharePoint, we can instantly leverage tools like Copilot, Power Automate, and Power BI for our documents. Whenever Microsoft launches something new, it’s available in our solution the next day or the next week. That’s a big advantage for our clients.”
This tight alignment means Epona365 users are not waiting for innovation, they’re part of it.
Epona’s team regularly meets with Microsoft’s product specialists to ensure that new features in SharePoint and Copilot directly enhance the Epona365 experience. As Lars puts it, “Our clients get access to AI and automation the moment Microsoft releases it but, in a way, that’s built for the legal world.”
The Scandinavian market is unique, but its trends echo far beyond the region. The conversations Lars had in Copenhagen and Stockholm are the same ones happening across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. “Whether you’re in Denmark, the UK, or Dubai: law firms want the same thing,” Lars says. “A reliable, secure system where documents and emails live together, powered by Microsoft 365, and ready for AI. That’s what Epona365 delivers.”
